Transformers: Rise of the Beasts - reviewed

Throughout 2023, studios have been cramming all sorts of post-Covid movies to make up for lost time (and money). With all the options out there, you definitely need someone to tell you what to watch first! And, you may ask, ‘where can I find this person?’ It’s me, of course, and I’ve got a good one for you! So buckle up and get ready to ‘roll out’ because we’re taking a look at Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Information:

Rise of the Beasts (ROTB) is the seventh instalment of the Transformers film saga. It has gained roughly 495 million views globally, and has earned 440 million US dollars (double its production value). Despite these impressive numbers, it is actually the lowest grossing Transformers movie so far. The movie is 2 hours and 7 minutes long, and is made by some of the world’s most renowned producers and directors: Steven Caple Jr., Michael Bay, and Tom DeSanto. They’re joined by a stellar cast of beloved actors - new and old - like Anthony Ramos, Peter Cullen, Michelle Yeoh, and Dominique Fishback. IMDb rates this movie 6.1/10, Rotten Tomatoes places it at 90%, and it has an audience rating of 3.9/5. Despite its mixed bag of reviews, I think it is a great action packed film that is perfect for families.

Plot (Spoiler Alert!):

Background info and storyline

The being named Unicron attacks the homeworld of the Maximals, a race of advanced transformers who take the forms of beasts such as gorillas and rhinos. In the process, the Maximals are forced to make sure that Unicron cannot eat any more worlds by using the Maximals’ greatest treasure - the transwarp key. But, despite Unicron sending his minions all over the world to look for this key, they have never found a trace of it. Until today. By the mistake of human Elena Wallace, the minions of Unicron find that the key is on Earth; so the war begins.

With the help of Optimus Prime and his team, the Maximals, ex-military Noah Diaz and museum intern Elena Wallace all race to find the halves of the key and save the earth. Throughout the movie, the groups go to many different locations and meet many different auto bots in disguise (a great view of the globe is an added bonus). In addition, there are lots of exciting fight scenes with close calls and nail-biting moments that will keep you engaged for the whole movie. We’re also hooked by the puzzles and side adventures that our heroes must endure before finding clues about the whereabouts of the transwarp key. There are even a few jumpscares, just to keep you engaged.

My Review:

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was a movie that definitely entertained me. It’s fascinating and action packed storyline gives it that hook which really captures me and many others. It also uses the traditional Transformers charm - a bit of mystery and a few puzzles. In addition, the cast added humour that did make me laugh out loud at times; the acting in this movie is definitely top-notch. I’d give it an 8.5/10 - perfect for when you want to sit down and watch a relaxing but action filled picture on a boring Friday night. So what are you waiting for? Get that TV turned on now, and start chomping down on that chocolate and chips while being thoroughly entertained by Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
