After rising up against the Kabul-based, America-backed government, the Islamic fundamentalist group, The Taliban, returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Afghanistan's economy has suffered under Taliban leadership, causing a massive increase in malnutrition and thousands of jobs being lost.
The Taliban are a Sunni Islamist nationalist and pro-Pashtun organisation, which governed the majority of Afghanistan from 1996 to October 2001. They were created in the early 1990s, aiming to impose an Islamic government on the entire territory of Afghanistan through a strict application of Shuria law.
The Taliban have established numerous laws that severely restrict the life of women and girls since taking control. For instance, women are now required to always wear the hijab or burqa outside their home, and are prohibited from travelling alone.
There are numerous actors that support the Taliban and even encourage their activities. Several militant groups, including the Haqqani network, Al-Qaeda, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, support the Taliban. A number of nations, including China, Iran, Pakistan, Qatar, and Russia, are believed to back the Taliban as well.
In conclusion, I believe the Taliban are only going to get stronger as they fear monger throughout Afghanistan. They may have extensive weaponry and an army of extremists, but what makes them so dangerous is their ability to show no mercy. In the aftermath of America’s departure from Afghanistan, the Taliban soared at the opportunity and gained the foot-hold they needed in Afghanistan to once again become one of the biggest terrorist groups in the world with abundant resources at their behest.
