Have you ever heard the word Ikigai? Ikigai is a Japanese word that refers to finding a sense of purpose and a reason for living. Some Japanese people’s lifestyles have been influenced by Japanese philosophy. Some people even think it’s the cause of their longevity and happiness.
What does ikigai mean?
The word Ikigai combines with “Iki” meaning life and “gai” meaning value. It shows that everyone has a purpose in life to offer the world. Some Japanese people say it is what brings them joy and inspires them and the reason they get out of bed. Some also say that it gives them another reason to live and leads them to a more fulfilling life. In contrast to traditional Japanese philosophy, which focuses on discovering what you enjoy, Ikigai has been understood in the west as a way to discover your ideal purpose.
What are the 4 parts of ikigai?
The four qualities of ikigai include:
What you love
What you’re good at
What you can be paid for
What the world needs
The diagram below helps to see Ikigai and shows the four main overlapping qualities:

The middle of the venn diagram where all four circles overlay is your Ikagai. At this crossing you will find a balance of passion, talent and impact which ideally leads to a happy life and having a purpose.
The 10 rules of Ikigai
The ten ikigai rules are frequently discussed as part of the philosophy. Following these rules will help you lead a happy and fulfilling life. Remember that these are the “ten rules of ikigai” seem to be a current interpretation most likely created by García and Miralles.
Which are:
Stay active; don’t retire
Living at a relaxed pace
Don’t overeat only (eat until you are 80% full)
Surround yourself with good friends
Stay physically active
Smile
Reconnect with nature
Practice gratitude
Live in the present
Follow your ikigai
Why is ikigai important?
Japan has the second highest life expectancy in the world, with women expected to live 88.09 years and men expected to live 81.91 years. Diet plays a very big role, many Japanese people believe that Ikigai has a lot to do with why they live long and live a happy life. Ken Mogi, a neuroscientist and author, explores how Ikigai is a very powerful tool to find your purpose in life and for a fulfilling life.
Apart from living a longer and happier life, knowing your Ikigai can help you:
Design your ideal work lifestyle
Create strong social connection
Create a healthy work life balance
Pursue your career dreams
Enjoy your work
I recently discovered the concept of Ikigai through the book Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it because it introduced me to a new perspective I had never considered before. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in exploring topics like this.
