The Enigma of Life Beyond Earth

“Who is more humble? The scientist who looks at the universe with an open mind and accepts whatever the universe has to teach us, or somebody who says everything in this book must be considered the literal truth and never mind the fallibility of all the human beings involved?”

―Carl Sagan

Throughout human existence, we have conducted many varied experiments and much research to try and gather information about the truth of the universe. As a result, empirical evidence has been accumulated and engraved in mankind’s internal framework. But, will we ever be capable of truly uncovering the cosmos’ identity? Should we start questioning existing beliefs that current science is certain of? In my view, human perception only processes a limited segment of a big picture, and aspects of the cosmos are inevitably shrouded in obscurity. But if the universe is so incredibly vast, we ought to begin broadening our mindset and trying to grasp the possibility of life beyond Earth—not only to allow humanity to reach the pinnacle of advancement, but also to enhance our ability to view concepts from new, unorthodox perspectives.

Throughout this article, I will introduce examples of ancient sites where both constructional and astronomical precision is evident, leading to multiple theories emerging regarding the true genesis of these structures.

A geoglyph is configured by removing earth or rocks and arranging the stones to represent a specific design or symbol. They are vast in size, so can only be viewed from an aerial position. The Atacama Giant is a 119 metre long geoglyph, located in the Atacama Desert of Chile - it is believed to depict a humanistic deity or spiritual figure worshipped by the Tiwanaku and Inca civilisations. However, some theorise that this perplexing geoglyph might portray a visual sign or message etched onto the Earth by a species which possibly coexisted with the primitive civilisations - a higher entity or an ancient ancestor buried in interstellar origins.

A well-known speculation relates to the Great Pyramids of Giza. It has been discovered that the 4,500 year old structure’s coordinates, 29.9792458°N, is equivalent to the exact speed of light which advances at 299,792,458 metres per second. Additionally, it is perfectly aligned to True North and other constellations. For example, the Great Pyramids - accompanied by the Menkaure and Khafre pyramids - were positioned to line up with Orion’s Belt which constitutes three stars. The ‘realist’ standpoint states that these features are merely coincidences, engraved in the psyche through delusional apophenia. In my opinion, aspects of the mystical pyramid which are uncannily precise to celestial details shed light onto several different prospects—either that extraterrestrial life has indeed contributed to humanity’s development, or that our current understanding regarding the knowledge and capabilities of ancient civilisations is erroneous.

The Santa Cristina well, situated in Sardinia, is another enigmatic mystery intertwined with astronomy. The keyhole-shaped monument dating back to around 1000 BC possesses flawless geometric composition, and is interlinked with Nuragic religious practices. Nevertheless, the construction of the well contributes to its ability to calculate astronomical occurrences. When equinoxes take place, the sun illuminates the rounded section carved in the well. Moreover, it inconceivably measures a phenomenon performed by the moon every 18 years and six months which involves the celestial object reaching its maximum height - I have discerned that this amounts to the number of steps in the well’s staircase. During this infrequent event, the moon reflects upon the interior’s water, perfectly positioning itself above like a premeditated salutation. As we assume what facts express, an imminent thought arises in our subconscious: how could humans from 3000 years ago have access to such advanced technological, architectural and astronomical knowledge? The ingenuity of the Santa Cristina well’s deliberately calculated features remain veiled by unanswered questions.

Conveyed through our world’s lingering conundrums and mysteries, humans clearly possess merely a fragment of knowledge about our world. The other unseen, ambiguous information may go perpetually unresolved and stay out of reach from expertise or mastery. It could be human arrogance, or the avoidance of opening up to controversial ideas due to the inevitable debunking of already ‘known’ specifics. This makes us imperfect; the declination of intuition and possibilities will result in mankind dissolving into a conventional, repetitive tide of mundanity where we inherently overlook key signals left by our ancestors. Ultimately, the matter of whether or not extraterrestrials exist could just be an auxiliary component of my overarching principle. What I wish to emphasise is the essentiality of humankind utilising a holistic and receptive approach to conceptions—only through this psychological maturity will we comprehend the complexities of existence.

“Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.”

—Frank Herbert
