Out of Print

It’s no secret that print is out of fashion- with the rise of the internet's poisonous instant gratification and tech companies consciously triggering our endorphins to addict us to our screens, our attention spans have measurably declined. No wonder we can’t seem to sit down to read the newspaper in the afternoon. And as the younger generations sit glued to their screen, the ship that is physical media quietly sinks behind them.

88% of adults over 65 (which is the highest reading demographic) either read daily or have subscriptions to printed news. This makes up over 50% of all readers of printed news whilst the demographic of those over 65 only makes up 10% of the population. This begs the question: As the Baby Boomer Generation dies out will print media follow them to the grave?

Is all hope lost? Maybe it is for the mainstream media seeking to become multinational conglomerates to rival pre-established news companies- however, younger generations have started a countertrend, focused on types of physical media involving DVDs, CDs, Vinyl, and vintage games. Print news and journalism might come back into style before long. Trends move quickly, after all.
