I recently took part in the TedX Competition (and won!) and I would like to tell all of you why you should join this absolutely fantastic opportunity!
TedX is a public speaking competition where students can speak about their interests and passions within a certain theme. This year, the theme was “A Step In The Right Direction” - as you can tell, these aren’t specific themes, but rather themes with a lot of room for interpretation.
I decided to speak about gender norms and stereotypes that exist in our world and how we can abolish them. This is something I have been passionate about for a long time and it was so great to spread the message around. I entered my recording and was in shock when I found out I was invited to the next round. I then got the amazing opportunity to speak in front of the entire middle school: it was a little nerve-wracking but it was such a great opportunity and I felt so proud of myself for winning. I was delighted when I found that I was the winner and would get to speak at the main event. I feel so fulfilled with this experience and I’m so glad I took a ‘step in the right direction’, and would encourage you to do the same!
This is a greatly beneficial opportunity: you can improve your confidence and public speaking skills, and also educate others about something you’re passionate about.
If you win, you get to speak at a grand TedX event alongside other students at the TTS Senior School and a few amazing guest speakers. And, even if you don’t win, you receive a certificate honouring your amazing efforts!
In conclusion, TedX is a great opportunity for you to showcase your talent and passions. Whether public speaking is a strength or weakness, it’s a great way for you to, most importantly, further a cause you’re passionate about.
