Before we get to the good part (the cookie recipe) let’s talk about the boring part. The history of cookies! Cookies originated in Persia, during the 7th century AD. They were invented at first as “test cakes”, for bakers to check oven temperatures before baking larger cakes. It was portable and it was shelf-stable. These cookies were spread across Europe and evolved into what we love today! Also, did you know that cookie means “small cake” in Dutch?

There are some ingredients that are very necessary in the process of making cookies, and these basic ingredients are almost found in every cookie recipe! Flour is the most important part of a cookie, the flour holds the cookie’s shape. But be careful, too much flour could end up making the cookies too dry, and no one likes dry cookies! Another key ingredient is sugar. Sugar adds in the iconic sweet flavour of cookies and makes it less crumbly and dry. Butter is also very important, as it gives flavour and gives it its moist texture.

To make a good cookie, you first need to beat butter until soft and add sugar. Then add the eggs and vanilla and beat them until smooth. In a different bowl, stir flour, baking soda and salt. Now add all the ingredients together and mix, but don’t over-mix. Now add in chocolate chips or whatever extra. Roll the dough into balls and put on a baking tray. If you want a better texture, put it in a fridge with cling film on it for around 30 minutes (you can put it in for as long as you want). Preheat the oven to 170 degrees. Then, take it out of the fridge and put it in a preheated oven, and then bake for 8-12 minutes. After the cookies are fully baked, take out the cookies and cool, so the cookies can cool down and harden. Now enjoy!
