Deadpool & Wolverine review ( By Isaac Lau )

(Spoilers)

Talking about Deadpool and Wolverine

I originally wasn’t going to watch this movie. I tried to see it in Singapore, however I found out that you are unable to watch R-rated movies in Singapore if you are underage. So, when I travelled to Australia during the summer break, I went past a cinema and saw a poster for the movie, where my dad told me that in Australia, they let you see R-rated movies even if you are underage. He then bought me a ticket and let me see the movie. And I’ve got to say, this is probably one of my favourite movies of all time. It’s definitely not perfect, but It is probably my favourite movie of 2024.

What I liked

I personally loved this movie from the beginning. Seeing Deadpool beat up a bunch of soldiers with Wolverine’s dead corpse while blasting NSYNC’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’ in the background was definitely a great way to start. I also loved the multiple cameos that we saw, including Channing Tatum as Gambit, Wesley Snipes as Blade, Blake Lively as Lady Deadpool and Henry Cavill as a variant of Wolverine. There were so many more I loved, but those 4 were my personal favourites. The buddy-cop between Deadpool and Wolverine was also really funny to see, as they were going from arguing to becoming partners and defeating the main villain, Cassandra Nova. The comedy was great as usual, definitely the best out of the trilogy. I also loved how the movie was able to transition Deadpool from the original Fox movies into the MCU, as it didn’t feel too clunky and instead felt smooth.

What I disliked

I have 3 criticisms of the movie, one major and two minor. Starting off with the minor criticism, I personally thought that some of the cameos were underutilised, specifically Sabertooth and Pyro. I feel like they were underdeveloped, especially since Wolverine just kills Sabretooth instantly and Pyro was really just there as Cassandra Nova’s lieutenant. I also feel like Cassandra is just an alright villain. While Emma Corrin captures the character’s insanity, I feel like her motive is just not very strong. My major criticism is Paradox. The guy is now on my most hated characters list. He is meant to be the twist villain, however, he just comes off as an annoying and unjustified loser, who gets what he deserved in the end.

What everyone thinks of the movie

While some critics have given the film mixed or negative reviews, the reception has been mostly positive. Many have praised the film for the cameos, the acting, the visuals, the humour and the dynamic between Deadpool and Wolverine. The audience has also loved the movie, which is surprising to me, considering how many adults complain about adult humour, and how ‘it’s bad for the kids’ even though it’s an adult movie.

How is the movie doing

The movie has grossed $1.28 billion worldwide so far, and it’s been predicted to make even more. This is a massive success for Marvel, as the last movie that Marvel produced that made a billion dollars was Spider-Man No Way Home, and Marvel was just recently recovering from a $200 million loss with the Marvels. It is currently the second highest grossing film of 2024, only behind Inside Out 2, which has currently made $1.675 billion. However, it is currently slated to be staying in that position, unless Moana 2 is able to beat it.

Summary

In summary, Deadpool and Wolverine has been a massive success overall, and is one of my favourite movies of 2024. (If Dune 2 hadn’t come out, this would probably be my favourite). I think that Deadpool and Wolverine‘s success will probably mean that we will see these characters in the future of the MCU and that Marvel will think that they should be making more fun movies like this.
