AI (or Artificial Intelligence for short) is a new technology that is breaking ground in our world and its technology that many of the Big 5 tech companies (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google) are investing time and money into. However, there is one question that remains in most people’s minds, what exactly is artificial intelligence? The term artificial intelligence, first adopted by the American computer scientist John McCarthy in 1956, refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning (the acquisition of information and rules for using the information acquired by certain means), reasoning (using rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions) and self-correction for any mistakes made in conclusions etc.
So what exactly can Artificial Intelligence to do? In short, it can do anything that the user programs it to do. There are many real world examples of Artificial Intelligence in our daily lives. For example, most smartphones from the last 7 or so years. The first device to have this exciting feature was none other than the iPhone 4S which sold in the millions, not only because it had a personal assistant which opened a huge world of possibilities such as telling the assistant to open apps or send text messages for you but also because it had other features that were ahead of its time which can be discussed at a later time.
Furthermore, Artificial Intelligence isn’t just something for consumers on their phones or tablets, but also recently in what is known as smart speakers. These speakers are able to play music and with the press of a button ,and a command can perform tasks such as telling you recent headlines, playing different music, telling you the weather and so on. It might seem simple but Artificial Intelligence isn’t just about consumer hardware but also consumer software. As of 2019, Google’s Cloud Business, which is responsible for maintaining Google Drive is composed a lot of Artificial Intelligence and this AI in Google Cloud helps perform tasks that would not only take much longer to be done by humans but also practically impossible considering the wide user database and demand for Google Drive and the time it should take to do work on Google Drive, as expected by the users.
Therefore, we can see that Artificial Intelligence is the next big thing in the tech industry and is not only revolutionizing consumers’ lives but also businesses and will go on to do greater things later on, such as making cars drive self driving (which is already being used to a certain level by Tesla and is in the testing face of many other car companies).
