Top 5 things to do at MacRitchie Reservoir
With seemingly everlasting greenery, forest trails and surrounding wildlife, the MacRitchie Reservoir is the best place in Singapore for nature-lovers. The 12 hectare reservoir is the oldest reservoir in Singapore and its large diversity of flora and fauna has made it one of the major highlights of the country. If you visit the MacRitchie Reservoir, be sure to try at least one of these top 5 things to do for a memorable experience in the reservoir.
1. Be thrilled by the TreeTop Walk
Prepare to have your breath taken by the amazing view of the reservoir from the TreeTop Walk. The suspended 250 metre long bridge above the canopy gives you a sense of thrill as the wind brushes against your face, chasing all your thoughts or work and stress away. The exhilarating view also makes it a great spot for taking photos, and spotting wildlife. However, the fastest route to get to the TreeTop walk is 2.5 km from the carpark in Venus drive which may be a hassle for some people. Nevertheless, it is worth the long walk.
2. Kayak in the tranquil waters
The calm waters in the reservoir makes it a perfect spot for kayaking. Even beginners can learn how to kayak in the special designated areas for novice kayakers. The Paddle Lodge run by the Singapore Canoe Federation rents kayaks for a reasonable price, at $15 per hour. You can get closer to some of the untouched areas of the reservoir and spot landmarks while kayaking.
3. Hike on the Nature Trail
Hike on the Nature Trail while being surrounded by the forest. The trail is a total of 11km, but it is made up of smaller trails which are collectively known as the Nature Trail. These smaller trails can be done individually if you are not up to such a lengthy hike. You would most likely encounter a macaque on the trail, since they are the most common type of monkeys in Singapore.
4. Enjoy a picnic
Pick a spot for a picnic and have a great time with your family. Children can play and have fun on the grass. But, remember to not leave your picnic basket unattended since that will attract macaques!
5. Observe rare birds from the Jelutong Tower
Climb up the 7 platform level Jelutong Tower with 360° view for bird-watching. There are benches on each level to watch birds for a long period of time and rare birds are spotted there from time to time.
