Sometimes the innovations and developments of the latest technology truly do astound people. How far science has come from the past, from first discovering the use of magnetic lodestones in Ancient Greece, to now, the building of Singapore's very own first robotic barista. She serves coffee to the public at CityHub mall in Lavender. Named Ella after the founder of Crown Coffee and the chief executive’s wife. People get their orders through an app, in which they can electronically send the drinks they wish to order to the robot, and it will be made for them. The first prototype of her was made in 2017, where it has been in steady development ever since. While this is a new and exciting concept for those of us living in Singapore, the building and usage of robot baristas is slowly taking over the world, mostly in the country of South Korea where they have a company called Dal.Komm Coffee, which has over 45 equipped robot outlets in malls, cafeterias and an airport.
It is extraordinary that there are so many of these and how convenient it is for many people. One of the robots in the city of Seoul can handle around 14 cups of coffee hence making it easier for people to get their cups, as opposed to humans handling it. Of course, this raises the question of robots taking over the jobs of many, leaving them without a job. Many professionals say that this may not be the case for a long time. Even though the rise of robots in everyday lives is slowly coming to be usual, it would not be the case that it happens so rapidly as the technology still has a long way to come. Places in South Korea also use the new robot system as a way to try and reduce contact due to COVID-19. In Daejeon, they use a small one, not to make the coffee, but to serve. They designed this specifically for this job, with the help of the state-run science institute. It makes its way swiftly and is very courteous to those whom it serves. In fact, to help the movement of these robots, the tables have been specifically arranged to help them as they travel. It even gives small tips which can make the experience all the more fun and enjoyable.
In short, this slow development of bringing more sophisticated technology into our everyday lives is soon bringing a new sensational experience for those who perhaps hang around the coffee area, will bring such a mundane thing to do, to a whole new level. So, if any of you happen to have some spare time, and want to try something new, go check out Singapore’s very own robot barista!
