Worldwide, if asked, millions of people will say the biggest issue on Earth is either climate change, overpopulation, or pollution. But how many people would say inequality? This is one of the many problems among humans that nobody really notices. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and politicians and presidents argue about what to do but don’t actually do anything in order to tackle this major problem. Solving it starts with you. Ask yourself, do the rich people of our planet really appreciate their lot? Do they recognise the hardships of the poor and, if they do, do they care? Do they have any understanding of what those worse off than themselves actually contribute to the world? Food, water, and other necessities do not just appear out of thin air. Actually, most things we eat, drink, and use come from the hard labour of the impoverished classes. Let’s take as an example a bar of chocolate. Perhap unbeknownst to you, 40-50 million people do the hard labour of harvesting cocoa, and earn only a few cents an hour. Without those hard-working, low-earning people we would not really have what we do today. Inequality isn’t just about the rich and poor. For hundreds of years, people of colour have not been treated the same as that of their white counterparts. Football players are victims of racist abuse because of their skin colour. Women too have much fewer rights than men in many countries. For example, women were just given the right to drive in Saudi Arabia two years ago. And, like the inequality in wealth, they work a lot harder than the rich, powerful, white men, and nobody really does anything about it. It seems, no matter how many people talk about it, nobody acts upon this issue. Politicians can’t do anything. Neither can world leaders. But you can act to change the world. Fix society. Give money to people who need it more than you. Treat everyone with respect, even if they are a different gender, race, or religion. Solving this starts with you...
