ending The Yemen War: A Guide for Dummies
By Dibyadeep Saha
In the last three years, out of all the headlines that have flashed before our eyes on the TV, one headline still hasn’t left our screens - the ongoing Yemen war. So what is the Yemen war that journalists around the world keep reporting on? Well, in simple terms, it is a conflict between the Yemeni government (led by Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi) and the Houthi armed movement, with their supporters and allies. Since the conflict still hasn’t been resolved and its effects still haven’t been neutralised, here are a couple of steps that I believe would end the Yemen war and its effects on the Yemeni people:
- Create a peace treaty which will be made with the benefit of both the Yemeni government and the Houthis. With both groups being rivals and them settling their disputes through militaristic methods, the situation is not getting anywhere for them. To make matters worse, the Yemeni people are not only being infringed of their basic human rights but also have a practically non-existent access to clean water and sanitation with 19.3 million Yemeni citizens in this category. This means that out of 28.9 million people, 67% don’t have access to clean water and sanitation which is more than ⅔ of Yemen's population! Thus, a peace treaty is the best choice and will not harm the Yemeni people further.
- Make refugee camps for Yemeni civilians with access to healthcare, water, food and sanitation. With most of the Yemen population suffering from a lack of clean water, sanitation, food and shelter, this is simply for the greater good of the Yemeni people.
- Raise awareness about the problem through social media for donations in supporting the case of ending the Yemen war. Since so many of us use social media, having advertisements about supporting the cause of ending this ongoing war will mean that a larger amount of people will be able to donate money and resources to the Yemeni people.
- Confiscate and halt the supply of ammunition and guns to both the Houthis and the Yemeni government. If this is implemented as one of the ways to end the Yemen war in the peace treaties, neither party will be able to attack the other physically. This would also make it safer for the Yemeni people.
- Build houses for the Yemeni people with financial support from the United Nations and NGOs (non profit organisations). Though a very large scale process requiring lots of money, it is crucial to making these hoes so that the Yemeni people will have a proper place to live. If started now, the Yemeni people will be able to move out of the refugee camps into proper homes.
- Lastly, establish different banks and industries. Not only will this provide the Yemeni people jobs, it will also provide them a place to store their money, take out loans, buy things that they want etc.
