Bethany Hamilton has been my number one role model. She was the one who inspired me to surf. She has accomplished more with one arm than two arms.
Bethany is a Hawaiian surfer who stared surfing small waves at the age of 4. She was only 13 when she lost her left arm. Two months after the attack she went back in the water: this is something she said “I’ve had to deal with some big fear: One, my arm is gone so how am I going to face my future? And two, sharks will always be in the ocean. But I believe we can do amazing things when we focus on our abilities rather than our fears.”
Bethany is driven by her passion as a professional surfer. She has inspired so many people and some are still amazed by how she got back in the water two months after. A line that she said was “Not all roses are red. Not all roses are perfect. But all roses have something beautiful about them! As we go through life, we may not be perfect but there is something gorgeous about each of us. So, when times in life become dark, you have to see the other side of the tunnel." Bethany said. “Wiping out is part of life- you have the choice to paddle back out.” It is true the only way you get better is to fail and then you get back up again and you catch that next wave; life does not go on if you don’t try.
One line that stood out to me was “As I pursued my passion for surfing, I realised that I didn’t need easy; I just needed possible. That's how I approach life: I look for the possibilities and I work hard toward those. Bethany Hamilton does not care what other people say about her and neither should you. You can’t let someone stop you from doing something you love. You just have to block out the noise and just focus on what is important to you."
