The name of this young singer has been echoing around the world for years now. She has 6 studio albums and 2 grammys, yet most of the world knows nothing about this modern day star. Hi, I’m Hasti and today I’m going to walk you through the evolution of this famous singer and teach you more about how her music has evolved through the years and about the different eras.
Yours Truly Era (2013 - 2014)
Yours Truly was Ariana’s first studio album. She released Yours Truly on 3 September 2013, the album was supported by its lead single ‘The Way’. It also included some other great songs such as ‘Baby I’ and ‘Right There’. The style for this album was quite modern 2000s but parts of it were very 50s pop inspired. In my opinion, this was an incredible album, but was quickly forgotten after her next few albums and a lot of the music in it isn’t appreciated enough considering it was a project that took 3 years to complete. Ariana also told some of her fans before the release of the album that the music they could expect from this was very true to her life and quite honest and personal.
My Everything Era (2014 - 2015)
This era was definitely one of her best. It was released on August 25 2014, and featured 5 amazing singles : Problem, Bang Bang, One Last Time, Break Free and Love Me Harder. Ariana also commented saying that she didn’t want the album to sound like an extension to Yours Truly, and wanted it to sound different, “I want it to sound like an evolution.” Some reviews even said that Ariana moved away from fizzy pop and moved to modern pop R&B. This album is very close to my heart and is definitely one of my favourites due to its several great singles and one of my favourite songs ‘My Everything’. She also kicked off her Honeymoon World Tour in 2015 featuring her first and second album.
Dangerous Woman Era (2016 - 2017)
Dangerous Woman, my second favourite album, was released on May 20 2016. It was originally called Moonlight but was later changed to Dangerous Woman. It features some stunning singles such as ‘Focus’ and ‘Dangerous Woman’. This album was rolled out quite uniquely as Ariana released a new song from the album everyday until the whole thing was released. This album showed a more hidden and dangerous side to the singer, in which she switched up a lot of her style. She used a lot of powerful vocals in some of the songs and definitely impressed many with this strong release. My favourite songs on the album are ‘Bad Decisions’ and ‘Moonlight’. This is also when she starts off the Dangerous Woman Tour, home to the tragic Manchester bombing incident.
Sweetener Era (2018)
Released on August 17 2018, this was Ariana’s shortest album era. This is because shortly after releasing this album she releases the album Thank You, Next. It contains several of Ariana’s best pieces such as Breathin, God is a Woman, The Light is Coming and Everytime. My favourite single is in this album, No Tears Left To Cry as it marks a new chapter in her life. Ariana said in an interview with Zach Sang that No Tears Left To Cry was like a farewell to Dangerous Woman and started a new part of her life. This was also the time when she was engaged to Pete Davidson, which was reflected onto her music with her song Pete Davidson and with her creating music that was said to be more ‘honest’ and ‘meaningful’ than what she released in the past. I highly recommend listening to this album, especially the song REM. The music style of this album is classic pop.
Thank You, Next Era (2019)
Thank You, Next was released 5 months and 22 days exactly after Sweetener. This album was very much based on the events going on in Ariana’s life such as the death of Mac Miller and the engagement that she called off with Pete Davidson. This could be seen in her music with songs such as Thank You, Next, Needy, Fake Smile and NASA. On the Billboard charts, Ariana’s songs were top 3 with 7 Rings, Break up with your girlfriend I’m bored and Thank You Next in the top 3. My favourite song on this album is Needy. The release of this album was followed by the Sweetner World Tour.
Positions Era (2020)
The most recent Ariana Grande era is the positions era. Released on the 30th of October 2020, this album is about the transition from the pain she was in during the thank you, next era and how she moved to the next big relationship in her life with Dalton Gomez who she recently revealed her engagement with. This is shown throughout the album with songs such as six thirty and safety net. The 2 singles on this album are Positions and 34+35. She also created a remix of 34+35 featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat. During this era, Ariana also released the sweetner world tour movie that she created. The style of this album is very laid back and more of an R&B style than pop.
I hope this article helped you learn more about the evolution of Ariana Grande and taught you more about her life. The next big project coming up for her is her collaboration with Demi Lovato in her new album ‘Dancing with the Devil’ which was released on April 2.
