A World Kept in the dark
Electricity has been the most useful invention of the modern world. It has helped us perform amazing tasks and has created the base of technology. Over time, we have come up with many methods to access electricity in abundance. In fact, electricity has been so convenient that we will not be able to survive without it. But what will the world be like without electricity?
Some people will probably think that no electricity means no electricity bills. Other than the cost benefit, without electricity we will be more socialized. This will bring back the olden days when people used to be more connected to each other and use alternate modes of electricity (solar or fossil fuel).
Electricity has also been very useful in our homes. Besides providing basic comfort such as lights, fans, air-conditioning, televisions and many more, they play a key role in one of the basic needs for our survival - food. Refrigerators, microwaves and other cooking appliances have provided us with healthy food to eat.
Without refrigerators, dairy and meat will infect us with diseases because of not being preserved well. Supermarkets will not longer operate due to the lack of electricity. This would result in a shortage in food. Other than that, we will have no access to clean water which will increase the chances of getting diseases.
The world will come to a standstill without electricity and generators will not be a permanent solution. Generators will only be able to cater for a while before running out of fuel. There will also be a massive financial impact due to loss in electricity and could lead to personal data theft and fraudulent practices. Furthermore, public transportation will be affected driving people to use alternate mode of transport including bicycle, or walking, as a result leading to a healthy lifestyle.
For us, it is difficult to imagine what will happen without electricity. Other than short term electricity shortages, we are so used to having it as a luxury while forgetting it’s true importance. Although it may seem impossible to live without electricity, around 1 billion people in the world are currently surviving without it. Are we using what we have well enough?
