Aru Shah and the End of Time is the first book in the Pandava Quintet series by Roshani Chokshi. Aru Shah is a normal 12-year-old student at Augustus Day Middle School. Well, maybe not so normal. For instance, she is known for being a liar although she just “stretches the truth”.
Aru Shah lives above a museum (the Museum of Indian Art and Culture in Atlanta, Georgia) that holds a cursed lamp. Throughout her life she remembers being told not to touch the lamp. One Monday, in Autumn break, Aru gets a surprise visit from 3 of her classmates. In desperation of impressing them and not being exposed, she lights the lamp and unleashes a demon which threatens to end the world! Everyone is frozen in time and she has only 9 days to resolve the crisis.
Her new friend and apparently her new mentor, Subala the Pigeon tells Aru that she is the reincarnation of one of the greatest warrior brothers in history--a Pandava brother. The Pandavas were five brothers who fought bravely in the Kurukshetra War, described in one of the two Indian epic poems, the Mahabharata. Subala, now nicknamed Boo, explains everything very briefly of how Aru has to defeat the Sleeper and eventually also eventually find her soul sisters. He takes a now confused Aru to meet her first soul sister, Mini, who is also a reincarnation of the Pandava brothers. You might be confused, but in this generation of Pandava warriors we've got a team of girls that are more deadly since they are sisters. Mini and Aru are given 9 days to travel to the Kingdom of Death to try and defeat the Sleeper, the demon threatening to end the world. Will these middle school girls be able to defeat this ancient demon and save the world, or will they be the end of the world, forever stuck in time?
Packed with adventure, new (and old) friends, and maybe a few gods, this book will leave you wanting more! Not only will you find a great book series and learn more about the Hindu gods and myths, but you’ll have a great time while you’re laughing.
So why not head down to the library, borrow Aru Shah and the End of Time, grab a mug of chai, and enjoy!
